KUALA LUMPUR, October 3 – As World Maritime Day approaches on 26 September, the focus this year is on “Navigating the Future: Safety First,” emphasizing the link between health and safety in the maritime industry. Anuj Velankar, General Manager at MedSea, highlights that chronic conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol pose significant risks to seafarers, often leading to emergencies if not managed correctly.

MedSea’s data shows that 67% of chronic conditions among seafarers are related to hypertension. Dr. Katherine Sinclaire, Senior Medical Advisor at MedSea, urges maritime companies to implement proactive measures such as regular health check-ups and health education to better manage chronic conditions and ensure safety onboard.
