KUALA LUMPUR, October 9 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reaffirmed his government’s commitment to implementing tough financial reforms, even if they prove unpopular. Speaking at the Khazanah Megatrends Forum, Anwar highlighted the recent rationalisation of diesel subsidies, which he described as a necessary step to prevent subsidising the wealthy and to steer Malaysia away from a potential financial crisis.
Anwar emphasised that responsible governance often requires making difficult decisions, citing his administration’s willingness to “take the bull by the horns” rather than succumb to populist pressures. He warned that failure to address such fiscal issues would have led Malaysia down a path toward bankruptcy.
