GEORGE TOWN, October 10 – The iconic Penang Ferry, leased to Printhero Merchandise Sdn. Bhd. for conversion into the Penang Ferry Museum, was towed from Bagan Dalam Slipway (BDS), Butterworth, on October 3, 2024, after undergoing repairs and modifications. The Malaysian Marine Department granted Printhero permission for the towing operations on October 2. The ferry is temporarily docked at Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) before its final placement at Tanjong City Marina (TCM) in George Town.
However, on October 6, the ferry was observed listing at the South Inner SPCT dock, prompting Printhero to take immediate action. Upon inspection, it was discovered that water was entering the engine compartment. To prevent sinking, the company decided to move the ferry to a shallower area near the SPCT warehouse for easier salvage operations and comprehensive checks. Printhero, with assistance from SPPP and PPSB, is currently working to identify the leak’s source, and no oil spill has been detected as of now, with ongoing monitoring of the ferry’s condition.
