KUALA LUMPUR, October 16 – In a significant advancement for Malaysia’s renewable energy sector, Leader Energy Group Berhad, through its subsidiary Leader Solar Energy II Sdn Bhd, has partnered with Plus Xnergy Services Sdn Bhd to deploy the nation’s first sodium-sulfur (NaS) battery energy storage system (BESS). The 1.45MWh capacity system will be installed at Leader Solar’s large-scale solar farm in Bukit Selambau, Kedah.

This innovative BESS boasts higher energy density and a discharge duration of 6-18 hours, making it an efficient alternative to traditional lithium-based systems. The deployment marks a pioneering step as it becomes the first megawatt-scale grid-connected battery for large-scale solar applications in peninsular Malaysia. Dato’ Sean H’ng, Executive Deputy Chairman and co-Group CEO of Leader Energy, expressed pride in leading Malaysia’s renewable energy landscape with this groundbreaking project, highlighting its potential to enhance energy efficiency and stability.

Plus Xnergy Group CEO Ko Chuan Zhen echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the NaS BESS’s role in supporting Malaysia’s net-zero ambitions and contributing to national sustainability targets. Installation of the environmentally friendly system is set to begin in mid-October 2024, with completion anticipated by the end of the year, promising a more stable and economically beneficial energy future for the region.
