GEORGE TOWN, October 18 — The mission to save Penang’s iconic ferry is now in its 11th day, with the primary issue being the ferry’s uneven grounding on a mudbank, causing it to tilt rather than the leakage itself. Initially, when the ferry was at risk of sinking at Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT), it was swiftly moved to a shallower area. This action likely prevented the ferry from sinking in waters up to 8 meters deep.
Despite efforts, the rescue team has struggled to maintain stability. The ferry was briefly stabilized at 7:00 p.m. yesterday, but the position only held for 30 minutes before tilting again. The team is focused on keeping the ferry upright to prevent further water from entering through the sides, a crucial step before repairs can begin.
Other complications include the uneven mudbank and fluctuating tides, limiting work to low tide periods. Printhero Merchandise Sdn. Bhd., funding the operation entirely, has spent RM300,000 to date, with overall losses surpassing RM1 million. CEO Abdul Hadi Abu Osman has indicated that the company may need to stop the rescue due to financial constraints, urging the public for support.
