VIENTIANE, October 20 – Malaysia has reiterated its commitment to diplomacy in addressing the South China Sea dispute, emphasizing the importance of cooperation through ASEAN. Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan stated that while China claims a significant portion of the sea, Malaysia is firm in upholding its maritime rights based on international law. “We adhere to international law, just as China does. However, what is essential is that we always utilise diplomatic channels and do not shut the doors to discussions,” he remarked.
Mohamad urged all involved nations to refrain from actions that could impede communication and instead come together for negotiations. He highlighted the need for a collective ASEAN approach to manage the dispute effectively, given the involvement of multiple littoral states with varying claims. Asserting Malaysia’s strong position backed by its long-registered maritime boundary map in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), he underscored the importance of safeguarding the South China Sea trade route, which is vital for global commerce.
