GEORGE TOWN, October 23 – The Youth Climate Summit 2024 – Southeast Asia officially at UOW Malaysia KDU Penang, with an inspiring address from YB Dato’ Seri Sundarajoo Somu, EXCO for Housing and Environment. Highlighting the urgent need for climate action, Sundarajoo emphasized Penang’s vulnerability to climate change, particularly rising sea levels and extreme weather patterns. He praised initiatives like the Penang Green Agenda and called on youth leaders to play a pivotal role in shaping a sustainable future.
Josephine Tan, General Manager of the Penang Green Council, followed with a powerful welcoming speech, emphasizing the importance of youth involvement in climate leadership. The five-day summit, themed “Empowering Action for Nature,” gathers over 200 young participants from across Southeast Asia to discuss critical topics such as climate action, food security, and water conservation. Tan highlighted the importance of education and collaborative action in addressing the climate crisis.
With support from various organizations, including Think City, The Habitat, and PowerSains, the summit aims to equip youth with the tools and knowledge to drive meaningful environmental change. Sundarajoo expressed optimism that the summit will spark innovative ideas and impactful initiatives, reinforcing Penang’s leadership in sustainability.
