PUTRAJAYA, October 29 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim affirmed today that government support for the needy will not jeopardize its stability, emphasizing that corruption and greed, not aid to the underprivileged, have historically led to governments collapsing. Anwar, who also serves as Malaysia’s Finance Minister, stressed that no government has ever fallen because of efforts to assist the poor or allocate funds for fair wage increases.
Speaking at the launch of the MADANI Residency in Putrajaya, Anwar highlighted examples from world history to underscore his point. “I have never read or seen in history — be it Islamic civilization, ancient China, or Latin America — a government falling because it helped the poor,” he stated. Instead, Anwar pointed to corruption and leaders’ hoarding of public wealth as the root causes behind the downfall of nations.
