Apple today unveiled the M4 Pro and M4 Max, the latest additions to its M4 chip lineup, designed to deliver top-notch performance and power efficiency for the Mac. Both chips, along with the base M4, utilize second-generation 3-nanometer technology, which optimizes speed and reduces power consumption. Equipped with the industry’s fastest CPU core and enhanced graphics architecture, these chips promise superior single-threaded and multithreaded performance. With Thunderbolt 5 support and a faster Neural Engine, the M4 series aims to elevate Mac capabilities for professional and AI-intensive tasks.
The M4 chip offers an entry-level solution with a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU, delivering up to 1.8 times the performance of the M1. M4 is built to handle multitasking with ease and supports up to 32GB of unified memory. Its display engine can manage multiple external displays, making it an ideal choice for everyday professionals who need reliable power without sacrificing efficiency. Apple says the M4 offers smooth performance in everything from photo editing to gaming, along with faster neural processing for AI-driven tasks.

The M4 Pro is crafted for developers and researchers who require robust performance. Its 14-core CPU and 20-core GPU, combined with 64GB memory capacity, allow for 2.4 times faster graphics performance than competing chips. Thunderbolt 5 integration boosts data transfer speeds to up to 120Gb/s, ideal for handling larger AI and video files. Apple highlights the M4 Pro’s capability to support complex AI workflows and 3D rendering, pushing Mac performance further for high-demand projects.
For professionals needing ultimate power, the M4 Max chip offers a 16-core CPU with a massive 40-core GPU, making it up to 4 times faster than the latest PC AI chip. The M4 Max also supports 128GB of memory with a bandwidth of 546GB/s, suited for intense data science and media projects. Apple’s Media Engine now includes dual video encode engines and ProRes accelerators, making M4 Max a powerhouse for video editing and large-scale computational tasks.

The M4 family is designed to harness Apple Intelligence, a suite of personal AI tools launching with macOS Sequoia 15.1. Features like systemwide Writing Tools and an upgraded Siri aim to streamline workflows by assisting with tasks such as rewriting, summarizing, and even generating original images and custom emojis. In December, Apple will integrate ChatGPT into Siri, allowing users to interact with advanced AI for research, creativity, and everyday tasks.
With M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max, Apple continues to set new benchmarks for power, efficiency, and innovation in the tech industry, delivering chips that cater to a broad spectrum of users while advancing AI capabilities on the Mac.
