KUALA LUMPUR, November 1 – The global airline industry is on track for a significant recovery in 2024, with passenger traffic expected to increase by 10.4% year-on-year, according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke. Speaking at the 16th ICAO Air Services Negotiation (ICAN2024), Loke highlighted the resurgence of global air connectivity, with many regions surpassing pre-pandemic levels, particularly the Asia-Pacific, which is projected to fully restore connectivity by the end of this year.

Malaysia’s aviation sector is also seeing robust growth, with a 12.7% increase in passenger numbers recorded in August 2024 compared to the previous year. Loke added that Malaysia anticipates 4% growth in overall passenger movement for 2024, driven by fleet expansions and the return of foreign airlines. Additionally, global air cargo is forecasted to grow between 6% and 6.6%, amounting to roughly 20 billion freight tonne kilometres.
