KOTA KINABALU, November 1 — Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced plans to present a proposal for the expansion of Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) to the federal Cabinet next Friday. The expansion plan includes a larger terminal building, a multi-storey car park, additional retail spaces, and more airplane parking bays, increasing the airport’s capacity from nine million to 12 million passengers annually.
Loke, speaking at the DAP Sabah convention, emphasized that the upgraded facilities would support the airport’s role as Malaysia’s second busiest, with potential economic benefits and job creation for Sabah. The expansion, set to be funded by Malaysia Airport Holdings Berhad (MAHB) rather than federal funds, is anticipated to begin as early as next year if approved.
Loke mentioned plans to explore integrating a shopping mall into the terminal, similar to Kuala Lumpur’s Terminal 2, to enhance the airport’s appeal to tourists. The cost of the project is estimated to be several hundred million ringgit, with MAHB expected to recover its investment over time. Loke also highlighted the federal government’s ongoing support for Sabah, citing the RM6.7 billion allocation for state development in the 2025 Budget, aimed at bolstering infrastructure, education, and healthcare.
