KUALA LUMPUR, November 1 – The Sabah government has officially withdrawn from co-hosting the 2027 SEA Games due to a lack of sufficient facilities, as announced by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh in Parliament. Sabah initially agreed to a budget of RM100 million for the joint hosting but has since recognized its limitations, prompting the decision to step back.
To address this, the ministry plans to seek private and corporate sponsorship to help fund the event, which will now rely on contributions from the federal government, state governments, and corporate partners. Sarawak and Penang have already committed a total of RM365 million toward the RM700 million estimated budget for the games, which will be hosted using a scaled-down, cost-efficient approach.
