GEORGE TOWN, November 6 – In response to rising storm frequency and severity in Malaysia, the Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) is urging the government to implement proactive tree management measures. With forecasts predicting multiple heavy rain events from November 2024 to March 2025, CAP stresses the need for preventive actions, including regular inspections, proper pruning, and the planting of deep-rooted tree species to reduce the risk of toppling during storms.
CAP President Mohideen Abdul Kader highlighted the devastating September storms, which uprooted over 200 trees in Penang, as evidence of the urgent need for better storm preparedness. CAP also calls for stricter practices during construction to avoid damaging tree roots, which weakens stability and contributes to the urban heat island effect. The organization advocates for a broader greening of urban areas to counter climate change and protect public safety, recommending that Malaysia take steps to join global efforts in cooling urban landscapes and enhancing tree care infrastructure.
