KUALA LUMPUR, November 10 – Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced that the government will ensure fair competition between Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) and U Mobile in the rollout of Malaysia’s 5G networks. This move aims to prevent either provider from dominating the market, Fahmi stated at the 2024 National Couriers Day in Cyberjaya.

Fahmi clarified that conditions were specified in the tender for selecting U Mobile as the second 5G provider, and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) may impose further requirements before granting U Mobile the spectrum. Additionally, U Mobile may collaborate with other mobile network operators (MNOs) for the rollout, but MCMC will enforce conditions to maintain market balance.

The decision to appoint U Mobile followed a rigorous technical and financial evaluation, with no public funding involved, differentiating it from traditional contracts. This arrangement, Fahmi noted, reflects the government’s commitment to a fair, competitive 5G ecosystem in Malaysia.
