SHANGHAI, November 11 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim underscored Malaysia’s commitment to joining BRICS, driven by a vision of a shared global future, at the opening of the 7th China International Import Expo (CIIE) today. He praised China’s leadership, particularly President Xi Jinping’s recent call for unity against protectionism, describing the vision outlined at the BRICS conference in Kazan as “spectacular.” Anwar emphasized that BRICS aligns with Malaysia’s values of cooperation among nations in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Global South, focusing on peace, shared expertise, and sustainable growth.
Malaysia, recognized as the “Country of Honour” at this year’s CIIE, sees this role as a valuable platform to advance fair trade and inclusivity. Addressing attendees alongside leaders from countries like France and Saudi Arabia, Anwar commended China’s remarkable economic policies and governance, calling them a model for global economic engagement. He expressed Malaysia’s commitment to furthering these principles through its 2025 ASEAN chairmanship, with plans for an ASEAN-GCC Plus China Summit aimed at fostering regional growth and inclusivity. Anwar’s visit, accompanied by key Malaysian ministers, also highlights Malaysia’s dedication to sustainable trade, governance reforms, and deeper ties with China, its largest trading partner for the past 15 years.
