SEBERANG PERAI, November 12 — Penang is set to introduce its first dedicated bus lane in parts of Jalan Penang and Jalan Ria on November 19, aiming to improve public transport efficiency and support Penang’s 2030 structural plan, according to State Infrastructure and Transport Executive Councillor Zairil Khir Johari. This six-month trial, developed by the Penang City Council (MBPP) with Rapid Penang, will cover a 500-meter stretch across three key areas, addressing bus delays due to heavy traffic.
Zairil explained that the bus lane project is expected to shorten bus travel times, particularly during peak hours, as seen in similar initiatives in Kuala Lumpur, which reduced travel time by 10 to 15 minutes. The bus-only lane, operational daily from 6:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., will accommodate public buses, tour buses, taxis, and emergency vehicles, aiming to facilitate safer boarding for passengers, particularly at Chowrasta Market.
MBPP will install signs and cones along the bus lane to guide traffic, with enforcement by MBPP officers, the police, and the Road Transport Department (JPJ). Zairil encouraged public cooperation, emphasizing that successful implementation could enhance bus service appeal and help reduce private vehicle dependency.
