SEBERANG PERAI, November 12 — Penang’s much-anticipated Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) project is set to begin in 2025, according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke. During a press conference, Loke shared that while final negotiations are ongoing regarding the design and cost, they are expected to be completed by the end of the year. The project, led by Mass Rapid Transit Corp Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) in collaboration with SRS Consortium, aims to improve connectivity across Penang Island and Seberang Perai.
Loke clarified that, although the Penang state government had hoped for an earlier start, the ministry needed additional time to refine the project, which now includes an added alignment connecting the island to the mainland, as directed by the prime minister. “The groundbreaking is likely to occur early next year, following the completion of negotiations and the signing of agreements,” he said, outlining a phased rollout for the LRT, with an initial focus on the Bayan Lepas to Komtar alignment.
The project’s second phase is also in the planning stages, aiming to extend connectivity from George Town on the island to Penang Sentral in Butterworth on the mainland. “This comprehensive alignment strategy will ensure seamless connectivity between the island and mainland lines, enhancing the overall transportation network in Penang,” Loke added.
