GEORGETOWN, November 14 – Syerleena Abdul Rashid, Member of Parliament for Bukit Bendera, has called for urgent enhancements to Malaysia’s disaster management strategy, emphasizing the critical role of the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) in addressing climate-induced emergencies. She highlighted the increasing frequency and severity of disasters like floods in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, and Kedah, which have displaced thousands and revealed gaps in Malaysia’s current disaster response system.

Syerleena advocated for improved training, updated equipment, and streamlined coordination among government agencies to strengthen NADMA’s capabilities. She also proposed integrating Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) education into school curriculums to prepare future generations and suggested adopting policies similar to Cuba’s, where private resources can be mobilized during crises. “By empowering NADMA and educating our youth, we build a resilient future for Malaysia,” she stated, urging decisive action to safeguard the nation.
