GEORGE TOWN, November 16 — Recent rainfall has increased water levels in Penang’s key dams, with Air Itam Dam reaching a safe 81.5% capacity and Teluk Bahang Dam rising to 51.2%. Despite this improvement, Penang’s dams are still not at optimal levels needed for the upcoming dry season, prompting Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) to urge residents to conserve water.

CEO of PBAPP, Dato’ Ir. Pathmanathan K., highlighted that although Air Itam Dam’s level is stable, the larger Teluk Bahang Dam remains under the safe threshold, needing significantly more rainfall to fill. PBAPP has proactively implemented “dry weather control” protocols earlier than usual to preserve water supplies. These measures include limiting water drawdowns, optimizing water treatment facilities, and transferring excess water to the Teluk Bahang Dam.

By reducing daily water consumption by 10%, Penang’s 689,786 registered water consumers could help increase dam capacities, prolong reserves through the dry season, and avoid potential water shortages during peak festive periods. With Penang’s current daily water consumption averaging 878 million liters, conservation efforts are crucial. Dato’ Ir. Pathmanathan appealed to the public to adopt mindful water usage, stating, “Reducing water use now is far more effective than facing potential shortages later.”
