GEORGE TOWN, November 16 — In an effort to preserve and promote the Chingay Parade as a shared cultural heritage, Penang State EXCO for Tourism and Creative Economy, Wong Hon Wai, announced Penang’s participation in a recent workshop in Singapore aimed at jointly nominating the Chingay Parade to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Collaborating with Johor and Singapore, Malaysia seeks to inscribe this centuries-old tradition, known for its vibrant performances and cultural diversity, as an international heritage.
Wong highlighted the significance of the Chingay Parade, stating, “The parades in Penang, Johor, and Singapore showcase unique elements while sharing cultural roots.” The recent workshop gathered experts from both countries, with facilitators from UNESCO and community representatives, to discuss essential documentation and cultural nuances. Penang’s delegation included representatives from the Penang Chingay Association and George Town World Heritage Incorporated, who engaged in in-depth discussions on the parade’s history, traditions, and its importance in Malaysia-Singapore cultural exchanges.
In December, Penang plans to host officials from Singapore to witness the Penang Chingay Parade in George Town, while the Penang Chingay Association has also been invited to perform in Singapore’s parade in February 2025. Wong expressed optimism, noting that this collaboration underscores both nations’ commitment to cultural preservation, building on past successes like the joint UNESCO nomination of the Kebaya, and hopes this effort will further solidify Chingay’s legacy for generations to come.
