KUALA LUMPUR, November 20 – At COP29, Malaysia reaffirms its commitment to an ambitious climate agenda, aiming to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Despite contributing just 0.8% of global emissions, Malaysia sees itself as a leader in climate action, leveraging both domestic policy and international collaboration to pioneer sustainable practices. Notable initiatives include the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and the Climate Change Bill, aiming to secure 40% renewable energy by 2035 and reduce carbon intensity by 45% by 2030.
To support ASEAN’s regional sustainability, Malaysia advocates for an interconnected energy grid across Southeast Asia and advances carbon credit initiatives through the ASEAN Carbon Market Framework. As ASEAN Chair in 2025, Malaysia plans to deepen regional energy cooperation, driving sustainable energy production and transboundary climate initiatives. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) continues to spearhead these efforts, recently securing Green Climate Fund support for its National Adaptation Plan to enhance climate resilience across sectors.
At COP29, Malaysia highlights the critical need for developed nations to provide financial and technological support, ensuring a fair transition for emerging economies. By positioning itself as a sustainable investment hub, Malaysia aims to create green job opportunities and establish itself as a leading sustainability champion in Southeast Asia. With focused efforts from NRES and international partnerships, Malaysia is determined to build a climate-conscious, prosperous future for all.
