GEORGE TOWN, November 20 — Public toilets in Penang are rated three to four stars on average, with some achieving five-star status, according to Jason H’ng Mooi Lye, state exco for local government and town and country planning. Speaking at the Penang World Toilet Day celebration, H’ng noted ongoing efforts since 2008 to improve toilet conditions at tourist attractions, restaurants, hotels, and shopping malls, including the introduction of premium toilets at major tourist areas.
Starting next year, Penang will enforce a “clean, charming, and fragrant” (BMW) cleanliness standard as a requirement for business license approvals. A self-monitoring mechanism will be introduced, and a statewide cleanest toilet competition will run from March to September to promote awareness. “I am confident all public toilets in the state can achieve five-star ratings with collective effort,” said H’ng.
