KUALA LUMPUR, November 28 – Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has urged Malaysia to adopt a two-party political system to avoid the recurring instability caused by fragmented elections and hung Parliaments. Speaking at the launch of Syed Hamid Albar’s book Idealis, Mahathir criticized the splintering of major parties, particularly Umno, into smaller factions, weakening their collective ability to secure a majority.
Citing examples from the UK and US, Mahathir emphasized that a two-party system would allow the winning party to form a stable government. Referring to the 15th general election, which led to a coalition government formed through alliances rather than direct voter mandate, he claimed such scenarios fail to reflect the true will of the people and disrupt political stability. Mahathir argued that Malaysia must restructure its political framework to ensure a more decisive and representative governance model.
