RIO DE JANEIRO, November 28 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for reforms to the veto power held by the United Nations Security Council’s Permanent Five (P5) members, urging for greater inclusivity and representation from underrepresented regions such as Latin America and Africa. Speaking at the G20 Summit session on “Reform of the Institutions of Global Governance,” Anwar described the current system as “grossly unfair” and emphasized the importance of reflecting democratic principles in global decision-making.
“The absence of representation from Africa and Latin America undermines the ideals of fairness and humanitarian values that the United Nations stands for,” Anwar said, adding that discussions on UN reform have spanned over five decades. He stressed the need for the UNSC to adapt to modern global realities by incorporating voices from all regions, ensuring the institution better represents the interests of the global community.
