GEORGE TOWN, December 11 – Penang’s ambitious Silicon Island reclamation project is progressing steadily, with key milestones expected by the end of 2025. Penang Infrastructure Corporation Sdn Bhd (PIC) CEO Datuk Seri Farizan Darus announced today that six acres of reclaimed land will soon be handed over to MRT Corporation for the Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) depot, marking a significant step toward enhancing connectivity. To date, 70 acres of the planned 2,300-acre island have been reclaimed, with an annual target of 300 to 400 acres beginning in 2025.
The project is part of a larger effort to create a green, integrated transport system on Silicon Island, including the Mutiara Line LRT, autonomous electric trams, e-buses, and water taxis. A temporary bridge connecting the island to Penang’s mainland will be completed by March 2025, supporting construction until a permanent four-lane bridge opens in phases from mid-2027. “This infrastructure ensures sustainable connectivity and supports Penang’s economic ambitions,” Farizan said during a media tour of the site.
Silicon Island will also host a 100-acre Green Tech Park, set to be ready for industrial development by early 2026. Silicon Island Development Sdn Bhd CEO Datuk Szeto Wai Loong emphasized its economic potential, projecting the creation of 220,000 jobs and positioning the island as a hub for industrial growth. “This development will significantly boost Penang’s economy and deliver ripple effects across Malaysia,” Szeto said.
The project also includes efforts to support local communities, with 722 fishermen out of 877 registered under the Social Impact Management Plan already receiving full ex-gratia payments. Farizan confirmed that new boats and engines had been provided to eligible recipients, with additional phases of support planned for other areas.
Silicon Island is being developed through a joint venture between PIC PD Sdn Bhd and SRS PD Sdn Bhd, with the first phase of reclamation managed by Gamuda Bhd’s subsidiary, SRS TC Sdn Bhd. The innovative use of vertical drain technology and sand-carrier vessels has expedited reclamation by 30%, with the first industrial facilities expected to be operational by 2027.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke also highlighted the Mutiara Line LRT as a key component of Penang’s transportation strategy, with the project set to commence early next year. Discussions with contractors are ongoing, ensuring that this transformative development aligns with Penang’s vision for sustainable urban growth.
