GEORGE TOWN, December 12 – The Penang State Government, through its Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS), has announced two pilot projects under the Penang Nature-Based Climate Adaptation Programme (PNBCAP). These projects—the Flood Retention Pond at Taman Lintang Nibong and the Blue-Green Corridor at Sungai Keluang—aim to mitigate climate risks and reduce flooding by employing nature-based engineering solutions.
Supported by the UN-Habitat’s Adaptation Fund, the initiatives blend flood control, biodiversity enhancement, and community engagement. The Taman Lintang Nibong project will feature a retention pond designed to curb flash flooding while doubling as a green space, benefiting local residents. Meanwhile, the Sungai Keluang corridor integrates sustainable urban farming, recreational spaces, and extensive tree planting along a 400m stretch.
Together, these projects represent a pioneering approach to urban climate resilience, setting benchmarks for sustainable development across Malaysia.
