SELANGOR, December 14 – Ara Damansara Medical Centre (ADMC) has pioneered a breakthrough in eye care by performing Malaysia and Southeast Asia’s first Corneal Allogenic Intrastromal Ring Segment (CAIRS) surgery using KeraNatural, a sterilized donor corneal tissue. Successfully conducted on July 10, 2024, the innovative procedure offers new hope to patients suffering from keratoconus, a progressive eye condition causing significant visual impairment.

Unlike traditional treatments like corneal transplants, CAIRS improves vision by flattening the cornea through minimally invasive techniques, representing a safer and more sustainable option. “This is a game-changer for keratoconus patients,” said Dr. Ainur Rahman, Consultant Ophthalmologist at ADMC. She highlighted that early detection and awareness of symptoms such as blurred vision, light sensitivity, and poor vision are critical to preventing severe outcomes like corneal transplants.

Despite challenges like limited donor corneas, the success of CAIRS marks a significant advancement in Malaysia’s medical landscape, paving the way for innovative treatments that could soon become the standard for addressing this challenging condition.
