KUALA LUMPUR, December 17 — AirAsia Flight AK1729 from Penang to Singapore was forced to turn back to Penang International Airport just 20 minutes after takeoff on December 13, reportedly due to adverse weather conditions. Following safety protocols, the flight crew opted for a precautionary return to ensure passenger safety, according to the airline.
The flight, initially delayed by two hours, was grounded for nearly eight more hours before resuming its journey. Passengers were provided meals, accommodation, and recovery options, including free flight changes, account credits, or refunds. However, reports from a passenger shared with Shin Min Daily News indicated a cracked cockpit windshield as the cause for the return, with a photo allegedly showing the damage.
Flight AK1729 finally departed at 5.50am on December 14 and landed at Singapore’s Changi Airport at 7am, 11 hours later than its original schedule.
