KUALA LUMPUR, December 23 – Malaysian lawmakers are urging the government to overhaul the Reproductive and Social Health Education (Peers) syllabus following alarming findings of sexual grooming cases involving children as young as eight years old. The Parliamentary Special Select Committee on Women, Children and Community Development, chaired by Yeo Bee Yin, highlighted the inadequacy of the current syllabus during a Dewan Rakyat briefing today.
Yeo, the Puchong MP, called for updates to the Peers module to include comprehensive definitions of paedophilia, better awareness of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and guidance on safe physical boundaries. She proposed gender-segregated classes to encourage open discussions and enhance comfort. “Our children mature earlier, and it’s imperative that education on these critical issues evolves to protect them from growing risks of sexual crimes,” Yeo stated.
