PUTRAJAYA, December 23 – Malaysia and Thailand have reiterated their shared stance on the South China Sea disputes, calling for peaceful and constructive resolution in line with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
Prime Ministers Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Paetongtarn Shinawatra emphasized the importance of adhering to international law, including the full implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC) and the timely conclusion of a substantive Code of Conduct (COC). Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to handling the issue diplomatically while supporting ASEAN’s unity in addressing regional challenges.
Additionally, Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry highlighted Thailand’s full backing for Malaysia’s upcoming ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025, with both nations agreeing to work together on key regional matters, including the Myanmar crisis and sustainability initiatives. Both leaders also pledged to strengthen energy cooperation, particularly through the ASEAN Power Grid Initiative, as part of their shared vision for a sustainable and secure energy future.
