LANGKAWI, December 28 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has assured that the government will not permit electricity tariff increases that negatively impact the public. Addressing concerns over Tenaga Nasional Berhad’s (TNB) proposed base tariff hike to 45.62 sen per kilowatt-hour (kWh) from July 1, 2025, Anwar emphasized that any adjustments would target high-income groups and industries with significant profits, sparing the majority of Malaysians.
While acknowledging the rising costs in electricity generation, Anwar reiterated that protecting public welfare remains a priority. He stated that Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and TNB will soon provide a detailed explanation of the proposal. The government has committed to maintaining current tariff rates until June 30, 2025, with a revised schedule supported by RM3.57 billion in subsidies set to take effect in July 2025.
