GEORGE TOWN, December 30 — Penang is grappling with a shortage of hotel rooms as domestic and international tourist numbers continue to soar, particularly during festive seasons and major events. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow highlighted the state’s need for more hotel developments, especially in Seberang Perai, to meet growing accommodation demands.
With Penang welcoming 6.18 million tourists through the Penang International Airport (PIA) from January to October 2024—a 7.46% increase from last year—Chow called for private sector investment in the hospitality industry, supported by incentives from the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA).
Speaking at the soft launch of the Iconic Marjorie Hotel in Bayan Lepas, Chow emphasized the significant role of infrastructure enhancements and upcoming developments, including the Penang Waterfront Convention Centre (PWCC), in attracting Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism.
He commended the collaboration between Iconic Group and Marriott International for the new five-star hotel, featuring 298 rooms and a design inspired by Penang’s Baba Nyonya culture. Chow expressed confidence that such projects will stimulate economic growth and create job opportunities, ensuring the hospitality sector continues to thrive.
