GEORGE TOWN, December 31 — Penang Gerakan Chairman Oh Tong Keong has urged Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow to clarify whether the land allocated for the upcoming Light Rail Transit (LRT) station in Sungai Pinang was originally designated for affordable housing projects. The first groundbreaking ceremony for the Penang Mutiara Line LRT station is scheduled for January 11, 2025, raising questions about the land’s prior use.
Oh highlighted that during Gerakan’s tenure, the land under the Jelutong Expressway (now Tun Dr. Lim Chong Eu Expressway) project was earmarked for 1,500 low-cost and 4,000 medium-cost housing units. He claimed that while some units were completed under Gerakan’s administration, the remaining homes have yet to materialize under the current government.
Oh emphasized the importance of balancing public transport development with addressing the housing needs of low-income groups, urging the state to ensure affordable housing commitments are fulfilled alongside the LRT project.
