PUTRAJAYA, January 2 — A trial run of 40 Quick-Response (QR) code lanes for Malaysians has commenced this month at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminals 1 and 2 to streamline immigration checks.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail stated that the new system, deployed in both arrival and departure areas, aims to reduce congestion during peak periods and festive seasons by cutting immigration processing time to just five to seven seconds compared to the 15 to 25 seconds taken by conventional automatic gates.

The QR code system, which eliminates the need for travellers to present passports during checks, enhances security and efficiency through advanced technology while minimizing operational leakages. Saifuddin added that existing manual counters and conventional automatic gates will remain operational alongside the QR code lanes to ensure a smooth transition.

This initiative builds on the government’s December announcement to explore faster immigration solutions for Malaysia’s entry points.
