GEORGE TOWN, January 3 — Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow proposed synchronising infrastructure works for the Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) and the Penang International Airport (PIA) expansion to minimise public inconvenience. Chow revealed that project owners MRT Corporation and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) are in discussions about implementing the projects simultaneously.
“The LRT station will be built near PIA, between Mitsui and the airport car park, making it convenient for travelers,” Chow said during a press conference at Komtar. He added that the state is collaborating closely with federal authorities to ensure smooth implementation. The first segment of civil works for the LRT, from Silicon Island to Komtar, is set to begin soon, with SRS Consortium invited as the contractor.
Additionally, an open tender for the railway system’s engineering, design, and construction has been launched, drawing significant contractor interest.
