KUALA LUMPUR, January 4 — Istana Negara has clarified that convicts seeking a pardon or sentence reduction must formally submit their proposals to the Pardons Board before its next meeting. The palace emphasized that such applications must adhere to constitutional procedures and will only be considered during the scheduled board session.

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s powers under Article 42 of the Federal Constitution allow the granting of pardons or sentence reductions based on the Pardons Board’s advice. The statement comes amid controversy surrounding former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s 12-year prison sentence, with debates over a potential house arrest arrangement.

Najib’s appeal is set to be heard on Monday, accompanied by planned rallies by his supporters.
