GEORGE TOWN, January 6 — The launch of Loong Air’s direct flight from Xi’an to Penang marks a significant milestone in Penang’s aviation network, enhancing its connectivity with Northwest China. This route is Penang’s seventh direct connection to a Chinese city and its 20th international destination, showcasing the state’s growing prominence as a global travel hub.
Penang’s tourism has seen remarkable growth in 2024, with a 222.7% increase in Chinese visitors arriving via international flights compared to 2023. Weekly flights from China have surged by 259%, rising from 17 to 61. Wong Hon Wai, Penang State EXCO for Tourism and Creative Economy, emphasized the importance of strengthening cultural ties and tourism opportunities, inviting travelers to explore Penang’s vibrant Lunar New Year celebrations.
With 35 international routes now operational, Penang’s government, alongside PETACE, remains committed to expanding its global flight network. The Xi’an-Penang connection, alongside routes to cities such as Xiamen, Guangzhou, and Bangkok, reflects sustained efforts to position Penang as a preferred destination for international travelers and a strategic partner in tourism and trade.
