KUALA LUMPUR, January 7 — Telegram has become the third internet messaging and social media service provider to obtain an Application Service Provider (ASP) C Licence in Malaysia, following Tencent’s WeChat and ByteDance’s TikTok. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil confirmed that Telegram received its licence from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) on January 2.
Meta, which oversees Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is still in the process of completing documentation to secure its licence. Fahmi also addressed Google’s stance that YouTube is not a social media platform, highlighting ongoing discussions to address regulatory concerns, particularly for features like YouTube Shorts. Meanwhile, the Melaka Digital Village Initiative was launched as Malaysia’s first QR code-based home address system, modernizing services for 623 traditional villages in the state.
