PUTRAJAYA, January 9 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High-Speed Rail (HSR) project could be revived if private sector participation is fully secured with minimal government involvement. Anwar, also the finance minister, emphasized that the government’s focus remains on addressing critical issues like poverty alleviation, flood mitigation, and education, delaying mega projects for at least one to two years.
He noted that a task force is reviewing “promising” proposals from private entities to potentially proceed with the project. Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, during his official visit to Malaysia, expressed Singapore’s openness to considering new proposals for the HSR project. Describing enhanced connectivity as beneficial for both nations, Wong lamented the earlier inability to proceed with the project and welcomed future collaboration on such initiatives.
