GEORGE TOWN, January 10 – The Penang state government and Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) are launching a series of multi-billion-ringgit water projects to meet increasing demand and mitigate water risks associated with climate change. PBAPP will initiate four Water Contingency Plan 2030 (WCP 2030) projects in 2025, totaling RM824 million, to enhance treated water distribution and boost water supply capacities across the state.
These include new water treatment plants and pipelines, such as the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant and the Sungai Kerian Water Treatment Plant. Additionally, Pengurusan Aset Air Berhad (PAAB) has committed RM1.023 billion for two WCP 2030 projects, and six federally funded initiatives worth up to RM700 million are planned, including the Sungai Muda Off-River Storage Scheme and upgrades to the Mengkuang Dam.
A separate RM1.7 billion Perak-Penang Water Project, supported by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, aims to secure a second major water resource for Penang by 2030, ensuring resilience against prolonged droughts and supporting future economic growth.
