GEORGE TOWN, January 11 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officially launched the groundbreaking ceremony for the highly anticipated LRT Mutiara Line in Bandar Sri Pinang, marking a significant milestone in Penang’s public transport development. The 29.5-kilometer light rail transit line, featuring 21 strategically located stations, is expected to revolutionize connectivity, enhance mobility, and drive economic growth in the region.
In his speech, Anwar emphasized the LRT’s potential as a catalyst for economic development, national unity, and social prosperity. “The LRT Mutiara Line will establish a new benchmark for infrastructure in Malaysia while spurring investments and supporting the northern corridor’s economic growth,” he said. Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow highlighted the project’s alignment with Penang 2030’s vision of transforming the state into a green, smart, and livable destination, thanking the federal government for its support in bringing the project to life.
Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp), appointed as the project developer and asset owner, will oversee construction, with packages beginning January 13, 2025. The line will connect Penang South Reclamation Island A (PSR-A) to Komtar and Penang Sentral, integrating seamlessly with existing ETS and Komuter services. Transport Minister Anthony Loke noted strategic improvements, such as extensions to Tanjung Bungah and Air Hitam, and the development of a transit-oriented hub at Tapak Pesta in Sungai Nibong.
CEO Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim expressed MRT Corp’s commitment to delivering high-quality rail infrastructure. “This project isn’t just about building a rail line; it’s about creating socio-economic opportunities, developing local talent, and fostering innovation,” he said. Scheduled for completion in December 2031, the LRT Mutiara Line is projected to create thousands of jobs, attract investments, and improve the quality of life for Penangites.
