KUALA LUMPUR, January 14 – The Mutiara LRT Line project has reached a significant milestone with the awarding of a RM8.3 billion civil main contract to SRS Consortium for the first phase of construction. The project, which spans 29.5km from Penang South Reclamation Island-A (PSR-A) to Komtar, is a key component of the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP) and aims to enhance connectivity and mobility across Penang.

Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp), the project developer and asset owner, announced the award following a groundbreaking ceremony officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on January 11. Transport Minister Anthony Loke, who witnessed the contract signing, emphasized the government’s focus on value management and inclusivity, ensuring 40% of sub-contracts are allocated to Bumiputera companies and prioritizing Penang-based firms to create jobs and support the local economy.

SRS Consortium, a joint venture led by Gamuda Berhad, will oversee the civil and structural works for the first segment, connecting key locations such as the Penang International Airport, Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone, and Georgetown City Centre. The second phase of the project, which includes a 6km sea-crossing bridge to Penang Sentral, is expected to open for tender in Q3 2025.

Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim, CEO of MRT Corp, highlighted the project’s broader economic impact. “The Mutiara LRT Line is more than infrastructure; it’s about creating socio-economic multipliers, fostering local technologies, and boosting the supply chain. Our direct project management approach will ensure seamless integration and deliver value to the rakyat,” he said. The LRT line, featuring 21 strategically located stations, is set to be operational by December 2031.
