LANGKAWI, January 21 — The ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat, held under Malaysia’s Chairmanship theme of “Inclusivity and Sustainability,” concluded in Langkawi with a strong reaffirmation of regional unity and a commitment to addressing pressing global challenges. Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan chaired the first major meeting of ASEAN’s 2025 calendar, which included discussions on the bloc’s strategic priorities and external relations.

Among the significant outcomes was the appointment of Tan Sri Othman Hashim as the Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair on Myanmar. The ministers reiterated ASEAN’s commitment to the Five-Point Consensus (5PC) as a roadmap for resolving Myanmar’s political crisis while supporting the ASEAN Humanitarian Assistance Centre’s ongoing efforts. They also addressed critical issues such as the South China Sea disputes, where they urged for peaceful resolution and adherence to international law, and expressed concern over developments in the Korean Peninsula and Ukraine.

Malaysia’s leadership highlighted its vision for an inclusive and resilient ASEAN, with plans to adopt the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 and enhance regional energy, digital economy, and environmental sustainability initiatives. The retreat also paved the way for upcoming dialogues, including the ASEAN Future Forum and ASEAN-New Zealand Commemorative Summit, aimed at fostering cooperation and advancing peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.
