BALIK PULAU, January 23 – A 54-year-old Chinese national was arrested yesterday for allegedly attempting to steal a credit card belonging to a 44-year-old Australian tourist during a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Penang. The suspect was detained onboard and will be remanded at the Balik Pulau Magistrate’s Court on Saturday, January 11, 2025.
Southwest District Police Chief ACP Sazalee Adam revealed that the case is being investigated under Sections 379 and 511 of the Penal Code, which carry a maximum sentence of seven years imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction. The suspect is believed to be linked to a syndicate responsible for in-flight thefts in the district, with three similar cases involving Chinese nationals aged 51 to 61 from Hunan prosecuted last year. Passengers are advised to store valuables securely and remain vigilant during flights.
