GEORGE TOWN, January 29 – Penang is set to solidify its status as a premier medical tourism hub in Southeast Asia with the launch of the RM2 billion Penang Medi-City project in Batu Kawan. Spanning 235.8 acres, the ambitious development will feature at least four hospitals, health and wellness facilities, technology parks, commercial hubs, and residential areas over four phases, with the first phase expected to be completed in eight years.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow hailed the project as a transformative catalyst for Batu Kawan and the state’s economy, emphasizing its role in bolstering Penang’s 45% market share in Malaysia’s medical tourism industry. “This project will create thousands of job opportunities during construction and in the high-value medical and service sectors upon completion, cementing Seberang Perai and Batu Kawan as Penang’s future,” he said.
