GEORGE TOWN, February 6 — Penang recorded a slight reduction in daily water consumption in 2024, with an average decrease of 5 million litres per day (MLD), according to Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang (PBAPP). The state’s total daily water demand declined from 877 MLD in 2023 to 872 MLD in 2024, representing a 0.6% drop.
The reduction was mainly attributed to a 6.4% decrease in domestic water consumption, which fell from 503 MLD in 2023 to 471 MLD in 2024. PBAPP attributed this trend to increased public awareness of water conservation efforts, improved efficiency in household water usage, and targeted initiatives to reduce wastage. However, the report also noted a 7.2% increase in non-domestic water consumption, which rose from 374 MLD in 2023 to 401 MLD in 2024.
This surge was driven by heightened commercial, industrial, and government sector activities, reflecting Penang’s continued economic growth. PBAPP Chief Executive Officer (CEO) stated that while the overall reduction in water usage was encouraging, sustainable water management remains a priority as demand from industries and businesses continues to rise.
He also highlighted the importance of long-term water security measures, including infrastructure upgrades and strategic water conservation policies, to ensure adequate supply for both residential and economic needs. Moving forward, PBAPP aims to further promote responsible water consumption through public awareness campaigns, investment in smart water management systems, and collaboration with key stakeholders.
