GEORGE TOWN, February 11 – More than 337,000 water consumers in Penang will experience a scheduled water supply interruption (SWSI) from April 25 to April 27, 2025, as the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) carries out crucial connection works for the RM8.7 million Sungai Perai River-Crossing Pipeline project. The disruption, expected to last between 24 to 48 hours, is necessary to enhance the long-term reliability and efficiency of treated water distribution from the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant (WTP), the state’s largest water treatment facility.
The affected areas will include industrial zones in Bayan Lepas, Perai, Bukit Minyak, and Batu Kawan, as well as various residential and commercial districts across Seberang Perai and Penang Island. In addition to the pipeline connection works, PBAPP will take this opportunity to conduct urgent remedial works on a leaking pipeline at Jalan Pengkalan Tambang, ensuring the integrity of the water distribution network.
PBAPP Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Ir. Pathmanathan K assured consumers that the corporation is taking all necessary steps to minimize the impact of the disruption. “This project is essential to strengthening Penang’s water supply infrastructure. While we understand the inconvenience, these scheduled works are crucial for securing sustainable water distribution in the long run,” he said.
PBAPP has advised consumers to store sufficient water in advance to manage their household and business needs during the disruption. The agency will provide regular updates, reminders, and water storage guidelines in the coming weeks. Consumers are encouraged to stay informed through official PBAPP communication channels, including social media, SMS alerts, and the PBAPP website.
The Sungai Perai River-Crossing Pipeline project is part of PBAPP’s broader Water Contingency Plan 2030 (WCP 2030), designed to future-proof the state’s water supply system amid increasing demand and potential climate-related challenges.
