NIBONG TEBAL, February 12 — The Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) will engage a company to assess Penang’s waste management system as the state moves towards adopting the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 (Act 672). Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow confirmed that discussions with the federal government have been ongoing for nearly a year, with cost evaluation being a key factor in the transition.
The state has also submitted conditions to the federal government before officially adopting the Act, with negotiations expected to conclude this year. Once finalised, the matter will be presented to the Cabinet for approval, and if the conditions are accepted, the Act’s adoption will be formalized, and relevant companies will be appointed to oversee implementation.
Last week, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming announced that both Selangor and Penang had received in-principle approval to adopt Act 672, which aims to standardize regulations on solid waste management and public cleansing nationwide.
