GEORGE TOWN, February 18 – Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia has questioned the Penang government on the allocation of RM8 million collected under the “No Free Plastic Bag” policy. Deputy President Oh Tong Keong criticized State Housing and Environment Committee Chairman Datuk Seri S Sundarajoo for failing to disclose how the remaining RM7.2 million was used after only RM800,000 was spent on reusable bags.
Oh emphasized that the policy has been in place since 2009, with millions paid by consumers for plastic bags. He urged the state to return the funds to the public through environmental initiatives such as recycling programs, waste separation infrastructure, and incentives for green technology. He also proposed setting up an Environmental Fund to support community projects and ensure the money is used transparently and effectively for public benefit.
