GEORGE TOWN, February 18 – Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) recorded the highest treated water consumption in Penang last year, using an average of 209 million litres per day (MLD), which accounted for 24% of the state’s total metered consumption of 872 MLD. The district’s high consumption is attributed to its growing population of 443,200 and its role as an industrial hub, housing nine key industrial areas, including the Perai Industrial Area and Penang Science Park.
Meanwhile, Daerah Barat Daya (DBD) ranked second in water consumption, consuming 199 MLD, largely due to industrial activities in the Bayan Lepas Free Trade Zones. To meet increasing demand, the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) is advancing its Water Contingency Plan 2030 (WCP 2030), which includes eight strategic infrastructure projects between 2023 and 2028. These initiatives aim to increase water treatment capacity by 602 MLD and enhance raw water sourcing.
Additionally, six federal projects, including the construction of new reservoirs and upgrading of existing dams, will help mitigate risks of water shortages caused by climate change. Looking ahead, the Perak-Penang Water Project is set to provide Penang with an alternative raw water source, ensuring long-term water security for the state’s growing population and industries.
